Introduction​
In this chapter, we'll explore the fundamental components that enable robots to interact with the physical world: sensors and actuators. These components form the interface between a robot's intelligence and the physical environment, enabling the classic "Sense → Think → Act" loop that characterizes all robotic systems.
What Sensors Are​
Sensors are devices that measure properties of the environment or the robot itself and convert these measurements into signals that can be processed by the robot's computer. Think of sensors as the robot's "senses" - they provide information about the world that the robot uses to understand its situation and make decisions.
Key Characteristics of Sensors​
- Resolution: The smallest change in the measured quantity that the sensor can detect
- Accuracy: How closely the sensor's reading matches the true value
- Range: The minimum and maximum values the sensor can measure
- Noise: Random variations in the sensor's output that don't correspond to actual changes in the measured quantity
- Latency: The delay between when a change occurs and when the sensor reports it
Common Types of Sensors​
Cameras​
Cameras provide visual information about the environment:
- Purpose: Detect objects, recognize patterns, navigate spaces
- Data: Images (2D) or video sequences
- Applications: Object recognition, navigation, manipulation, human-robot interaction
- Limitations: Affected by lighting conditions, requires significant processing power
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)​
LiDAR systems use laser beams to measure distances:
- Purpose: Create 3D maps of the environment, detect obstacles
- Data: Point clouds representing distances to objects
- Applications: Navigation, mapping, obstacle detection
- Advantages: Works in various lighting conditions, provides accurate distance measurements
- Limitations: Can be expensive, may not detect transparent or highly reflective objects well
IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit)​
IMUs measure motion and orientation:
- Purpose: Track the robot's movement, maintain balance, detect orientation
- Components:
- Accelerometers: measure linear acceleration
- Gyroscopes: measure angular velocity
- Magnetometers: measure magnetic fields (for compass direction)
- Applications: Balance control, navigation, motion tracking
- Advantages: Provides immediate information about motion and orientation
- Limitations: Subject to drift over time, requires periodic calibration
Other Important Sensors​
- Force/Torque Sensors: Measure forces applied to the robot, important for manipulation
- Tactile Sensors: Detect touch, pressure, and texture
- Ultrasonic Sensors: Use sound waves to measure distances, often used for obstacle detection
- Temperature Sensors: Monitor environmental and internal temperatures
- GPS: Provide global positioning information (outdoor environments)
What Actuators Are​
Actuators are devices that convert control signals into physical actions. They are the robot's "muscles," enabling it to interact with the physical world by moving, manipulating objects, or changing their state.
Key Characteristics of Actuators​
- Force/Torque: The maximum force or torque the actuator can apply
- Speed: How quickly the actuator can move or respond
- Precision: How accurately the actuator can achieve a desired position or force
- Power consumption: How much energy the actuator requires
- Back-drivability: Whether external forces can move the actuator when powered off
Common Types of Actuators​
Electric Motors​
Electric motors are the most common type of actuator in robotics:
- DC Motors: Simple, reliable, good for continuous rotation
- Servo Motors: Include built-in feedback for precise position control
- Stepper Motors: Move in discrete steps, good for precise positioning
- Brushless Motors: More efficient and longer-lasting than brushed motors
Hydraulic Actuators​
- Purpose: Generate high forces for heavy-duty applications
- Advantages: Very high power-to-weight ratio, precise control
- Disadvantages: Complex plumbing, potential for fluid leaks, maintenance requirements
- Applications: Heavy machinery, large robots, industrial applications
Pneumatic Actuators​
- Purpose: Use compressed air to generate motion
- Advantages: Clean (no oil), responsive, relatively simple
- Disadvantages: Require air compressor, less precise control than electric
- Applications: Factory automation, some robotic grippers
Linear Actuators​
- Purpose: Create straight-line motion rather than rotation
- Applications: Extending/retracting robot limbs, adjusting heights, opening/closing mechanisms
The Sense → Think → Act Loop​
The fundamental pattern in robotics involves three interconnected steps:
Sense​
- Sensors continuously gather information about the environment and the robot's state
- Data includes visual information, distance measurements, orientation, forces, etc.
- Sensor fusion combines data from multiple sensors to create a more complete understanding
Think​
- The robot's computer processes sensor data to understand the situation
- Planning algorithms determine appropriate actions based on goals and constraints
- Decision-making considers safety, efficiency, and task requirements
Act​
- Actuators execute the planned actions
- Physical movements change the robot's state or the environment
- Actions may include locomotion, manipulation, or other physical interactions
Continuous Cycle​
This loop repeats continuously:
- Actions change the environment or robot state
- Changes are detected by sensors
- New information triggers updated thinking and planning
- Updated plans result in new actions
Human vs Robot Sensing​
Understanding the differences between human and robot sensing helps us appreciate both the capabilities and limitations of robotic systems:
Human Advantages​
- Multi-modal integration: Humans seamlessly combine information from multiple senses
- Adaptive attention: Humans can focus sensory processing on important areas
- Predictive processing: Humans use prior experience to interpret ambiguous sensory data
- Context awareness: Humans understand how context affects sensory interpretation
Robot Advantages​
- Precision: Robots can measure quantities with high precision and repeatability
- Range: Robots can sense outside human perceptual ranges (infrared, ultrasonic, etc.)
- Consistency: Robots don't get tired or distracted like humans
- Connectivity: Multiple robots can share sensor information
Complementary Capabilities​
Rather than competing, human and robot sensing capabilities are often complementary:
- Robots excel at precise measurement and continuous monitoring
- Humans excel at interpretation and adaptation to novel situations
- Combined systems can leverage the strengths of both
